GRANITE ENTRY STATEMENT - BOYA
this is a tribute to my neighbours, who DROVE by PILES OF rock out front for nine long years.
The rock came from a stockpile from my dad, who had recently retired as a stonemason. I knew I wanted to turn it into an entry statement - I just didn’t know when.
When I finally laid the footings in late 2024, it was a mix of relief and excitement. Excited to finally give form to the rocks I had been whipper snippering around for the best part of a decade. And relieved that I no longer had to explain to disappointed passersby that it wasn’t for taking.
Design wise, we tossed up a few ideas, some interesting and architectural and asymmetric, before landing on a simple matching wing wall form that we could tie into potential fencing in the future.
Short of a few rocks, I sourced some beautiful moss rock from Suitz Landscaping, and mixed it in with the existing material.
The result is some eye-catching contrasts, with the weathered browns and dark greys popping against the soft pinks and beiges of the base rock.
A stainless steel mailbox sleeve was built into the right wall, while the capping was left un-grouted to maintain the dry stack look.
The work was completed across several weeks (actually, more like months), as I squeezed in around other work and family life. All went well, and it as a really satisfying build in the end.
