GRANITE BUILT-IN BBQ - BOYA

WHEN YOU LIVE OPPOSITE MOUNTAIN QUARRY, CHANCES ARE THERE’S A FAIR BIT OF ROCK ON YOUR BLOCK.

If the suburb name didn’t tip us off (Boya is Noongar for ‘rock’), the dramatic gash in the hillside would, leaving a stunning vista reminiscent of a Pilbara gorge that lights up red in the setting sun.

Our 3,300sqm block enjoys many granite outcrops, with big, beautiful boulders scattered amongst grass trees and wandoos. So when we decided we wanted a feature stone in-built BBQ, we didn’t have to look far.

After gathering up a mix of native diorite and granite stone, flat stepping stones and rough garden edging laid by the previous owner, and some fresh rock made from breaking up boulders, I had cobbled together enough face rock.

The main rock bbq form is built into a large boulder, then wraps around a beautiful marri tree with a continuous retaining wall. I managed to split some larger pieces to build out the counter tops, maintaining a natural aesthetic.

All in all a great result that utilises natural material on the block.
